Virtually all of us seek the experience of being able to design our own lives; that is, the ability to bring about the types of Results we say we want, in a number of different areas. And virtually everyone involved in a coaching relationship is seeking to bring about a change, a shift in these Results. People engage in personal life coaching precisely because they are seeking to bring about a tomorrow that is meaningfully different, in one or more areas, than yesterday. Imagine a big eye in the sky, looking down at a stick person. This is meant to indicate you taking a look at you, me taking a look at me. One of the most important first steps for anyone seeking this type of growth the practice of “flexing the Big Eye” – in other words, purposefully taking a look at ourselves, and in particular, at what we’re up to in language. We all have the little voice inside, the internal dialogue, the ongoing narrative that is seemingly always running. If language were merely a passive and descriptive phenomena, we could say that this internal conversation is simply describing what is going on, and that’s it. But if, on the other hand, our language creates and generates, if our internal conversations move us in the world and shape our experiences, our prevailing moods and emotions, our relationships and results… then there is great value in paying attention to our stories and beliefs. The invitation is to pay more attention to your internal conversations, your stories and your beliefs – especially those about yourself and your life. In a non-judgmental way, see yourself as the author of your stories and your life to-date… while at the same time, understand that you have the authority to author new beliefs and new stories, starting now. Seek opportunities to talk with those close to you, those you trust, and explore ways in which you may have been limiting yourself and your possibilities, without being aware of it. View all of this as a type of learning. You have the power to design your tomorrow, and it all starts with flexing the Big Eye today.
